Creating a food basket for Africa
At Boschveld Chickens we really focus on understanding a community’s needs in new ways, finding innovative solutions to meet those needs and delivering solutions with financial sustainability in mind.
To help understand the situation in communities we often focus on the Problem Identification to ensure the needs will be met in the right ways. Extreme poverty is more than a lack of money or material resources, it is a condition whereby an individual lacks the opportunity to make meaningful decisions that will have a positive outcome in that person’s life. One of the primary symptoms of poverty in children around the world is hunger and it shows it’s relationship to symptoms such as malnutrition, low birth rate and poor health. Each year, millions of children die from malnutrition and although hunger is preventable it requires knowledge and action.
Proper nutrition for every child is a priority at Boschveld Chickens and our innovative concept provides children with nutritious meals and snacks on a daily basis, it also helps their families generate an income while developing underdeveloped economies and communities.
Extreme poverty is not necessary, as one of the greatest humanitarian crisis’s of our time it can, and must end. At Boschveld Chickens we believe in a different approach to poverty solutions, We believe that development consists of the removal of various types of no freedom that leave people with little choice and little opportunity of exercising their reasoned agency. We love to envision a world in which all people live in an enabled environment with lasting, meaningful choices. This way people will be able to engage in healthy behavior while being able to feed their families, overcome challenges and be free to exercise their activity.
Our Humanitarian Vision
Ending extreme poverty is more than addressing the lack of money in communities, it’s about creating an enabling environment where people have the ability to make meaningful choices. Our mission is to contribute towards alleviating poverty in these remote and rural areas.
Choice is powerful and opens the door to hope, opportunity, change and a better future. We wish
to empower people to make meaningful choices on their own-not to create an environment where
choices are made for them.
Our ultimate goal is to contribute towards ending extreme poverty in remote, rural areas of failed states and conflict zones by building self-sustaining, self-scaling programs that enable communities
across an entire region to lift themselves out of extreme poverty within a realistically short period of time.
Selecting South Africa as our initial project site, has allowed us to test the African Breadbasket in
relatively stable circumstances. In 5 years we have foreseen to already have empowered over 20,000 people out of extreme poverty and built a for-profit social enterprise that is rapidly approaching profitability. Our next step will be to scale regions with increased volatility, we will then focus on scaling our platform for effective nation building to include: Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.
